Little Strangers: Portrayals of Adoption and Foster Care in America, 1850-1929
By Claudia Nelson
"A detailed study of the way adoption, fostercare, and the adoptive triad was viewed in the United States through an examination of literature of the late 1800's and early 1900's. The discussion of orphan literature in this time period is especially fascinating, as this rarely examined stereotyping still continues today. Social issues discussed in this scholarly book include immigration, poverty, heredity, enviornment, stereotypes, and gender." (Allison Martin)

White Male Infant
By Barbara D'Amato
"A family's international adoption from Russia is the setting for this mystery thriller by well known author Barbara D'Amato. It is a gripping story but an unsettling view of international adoption." (Allison Martin)

Adoption Nation

Adoption Nation : How the Adoption Revolution Is Transforming America
By Adam Pertman
"Explores the attitudes toward adoption in our society - present and past, and examines the impact of these attitudes on the lives of the adoption triad members (adoptees, adoptive parents and birth parents)... This is a sweeping view of adoption, and provides an important perspective of our role as adoptive families in the broader society. Because we are so influenced by our society, and in fact seem to be a great source of curiosity to the media these day, this book is crucial to adoptive parents. In addition, we need to understand the broader issues at work around us - which can have long lasting emotional and legal consequences." (Allison Martin)

Secret Thoughts of an Adoptive Mother
by Jana Wolff

"Wolff tackles some tough topics in her book - racism, biological determinism, uncertainties of adoption, and the building of a long-term relationship with the birthmother- as well as the normal worries of all parents... While the reader may not resonate with every thought in this book, overall it is a revealing and honest testament by this first time adoptive mother of her reponse to the challenges of infertility and domestic adoption." (Allison Martin)

Order Adopting After Infertility The Stranger Who Bore Me: Adoptee-Birth Mother Interactions
by Karen March
"Although a bit dated, this book is an interesting introduction to search which I would recommend to adoptees and adoptive parents. Through interviews with 60 adult adoptees, of which 34 initated direct search for their birthparents, the various reasons and emotional responses to this decision and results are revealed. Unlike parents adopting today, the adoptive parents in this older study of adult adoptees are disturbed (or this is the anticipation) by the concept of search. March's presentation of the emotional aspects underlying decisions and reactions to search, in a academic research format is remarkable. The personal stories are all well presented and quite fascinating. The book is controversal as it indicates the majority of adoptees do not search. However its coverage of those who do is very sympathetic." (Allison Martin)
