Reviewed by Allison Martin Written by a dedicated team of nurses under the capable editing of Jeanette Zaichkin, Newborn Intensive Care: What Every Parent Needs to Know, provides the easiest to use and most up to date book on prematurity available today. The modern format with bold section headings and concise paragraphs, accompanied by numerous illustrations, graphs and charts make it useful and very readable. Zaichkin's book is highly recommended as a great reference for most aspects of prematurity - in the NICU and after. It is almost encyclopeidia like in coverage and layout and will be a reference that you will turn to often during your NICU experience. Despite the number of writers the tone stays consistent through out the volume, which adds to the readability while broadening the scope. The book is very authoritative and the depth and detail is excellent. For a more sympathetic coverage of feelings and emotions and for information on preemies who are smaller and sicker, you may wish to supplement this book with another guide. However, for a indepth coverage of the medical and practical experience of you and your child in the NICU (and afterward, at home) - this book is terrific. Quote from the book: "The technology in the NICU is important to your baby's survival and holds promise for better neonatal outcomes but it cannot replace the importance of your voice, your touch and your long-term committment as an involved parent." You may also call the book order line at the publisher at 1-888-NICU-INK (1-888-642-8465) and order directly from the office for immediate service. |
