Review by Allison Martin The first book in the well known Chicken Soup books to focus on adoption, Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul provides the usual heartwarming short vignettes that this series does so well. Most of the stories are related to the adoption journey or tales of how children joined their adoptive "forever" families; a smaller selection relates to post adoption situations, such as birth parent or homeland search. The stories in Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul run the gamut from private domestic adoption to foreign adoption, adoption of babies and adoption of older kids or children with special needs, and all types of families. Instead of being organized around life stages or the adoption triad, stories are grouped by emotional concepts - gratitude, healing, overcoming obstacles, lessons and love. So you might find a story from an adoptive mother in between an adoptee story and a birth mother story; a humorous story in between a tragic tale and a travel story. The vignettes are all well polished, easy to read and heart warming; occasionally they make your catch your breath in surprise or empathy. Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul is an excellent present for adoptive families or those considering adoption, who might enjoy a bit of encouragement, and a feeling of belonging to a wider, far reaching community. |
